"The more we fear to suffer, the more we need to do so,"
say the great spiritual writer and director Francois Fenelon.
Suffering is part of life. Even Christ modeled a life of suffering.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that if we do not have something of the ascetic in us,
we will find it hard to follow after God.
This tendency to avoid difficulty is a grave spiritual failing that can
and often does keep us in Christian infancy.
Many great spiritual writers have warned us that this life is difficult and that we can use the difficulty to build our character.
See Chapter 7 of the book, "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas
He spread His wings and caught me, He carried me on His pinions!
